Suitable for a wide range of foods and dishes, the packaging features the world’s first plastic-free coating for takeaway containers made from plant protein. The multiple award-winner is now available to all Lieferando restaurant partners in Austria. Its launch is made possible through an international collaboration with manufacturer Huhtamaki.
Made from sustainably sourced corrugated cardboard and finished with a plastic-free, fully biodegradable Morro coating, Lieferando Austria is now offering these folding boxes to its 4800 restaurant partners as an environmentally friendly alternative.
“Thanks to their durability and thermal insulation, these packages are suitable for a wide range of foods and dishes – including greasy meals that are traditionally difficult to transport,” said Lieferando Managing Director, Natascha Mauthner.
The innovation has already been successfully tested in the UK and Germany, with demand for eco-friendly options remaining strong. “We’re all the more pleased that this unique solution can now be ordered via our partner webshop in Austria and used by our local restaurant partners,” explained Mauthner.
At its heart is the Morro coating – an innovation by UK-based company Xampla, a leader in material innovation and development. Made from plants and produced without chemical modification, it’s recyclable and biodegradable in all environments, making it a versatile option for delivery.
“We are excited to work with Lieferando and Huhtamaki – two forward-thinking partners who share our commitment to reducing plastic pollution,” said Xampla CEO, Alexandra French. “Our Morro coating is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing packaging processes and offers a high-performance alternative to plastic. Together, we are setting a new standard for environmentally conscious food packaging.”
The innovation has already won multiple awards in 2025, including ‘Packaging of the Year’ at the Responsible Packaging Expo Awards and ‘Innovation of the Year’ at the UK Packaging Awards.
The introduction of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics aligns with the global ambition of Lieferando’s parent company, Just Eat Takeaway.com, to reduce plastic consumption.
